What’s included in an MMDS AC installation
- Load calculation. We size the system to your home’s actual cooling needs, not the tonnage of the old unit. Oversized units short-cycle and leave the house clammy; undersized units run nonstop.
- New condenser and matched indoor coil. A mismatched coil costs efficiency and can void the manufacturer warranty.
- New line set or flush, pad, disconnect and whip as needed, plus a new condensate line and safety switch.
- Permits and code compliance, including locking refrigerant caps where your village requires them.
- Startup and testing. We check refrigerant charge, airflow and temperature split before we leave, then walk you through the thermostat.
- Haul-away of the old equipment and proper refrigerant recovery.

How much does AC replacement cost?
A basic central air conditioner replacement typically runs $4,000–$8,000 installed, depending on the size of your home, the brand, and what needs to be updated (line set, electrical, coil). A heat pump typically runs $6,000–$10,000 installed, but after the ComEd instant discount, the cost is much closer to a standard AC.
Our honest advice on efficiency: in the Chicago area, paying extra for an air conditioner rated above about 17 SEER2 rarely pays for itself. Our cooling season is short, so the energy savings take too long to cover the higher price. Those ultra-high-efficiency units make sense in places like Florida, where systems run nearly year-round. We’ll recommend the efficiency level that actually makes financial sense for your home.

Consider a heat pump instead of a plain AC
A heat pump looks and cools exactly like a central air conditioner, but it also heats your home in fall, winter and spring. Paired with your existing furnace as a dual-fuel system, it handles most of your heating and lets the furnace take over only on the coldest days.
ComEd currently offers instant discounts of up to $2,000 on qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps, plus $75 for an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat installed with it.
