The setup we recommend: two-stage furnace + inverter heat pump
For most Chicagoland homes, we recommend pairing a two-stage, variable-speed furnace with an inverter heat pump. This is called a dual-fuel or hybrid system, and here’s how it works:
- Above about 35°F, the heat pump heats your home efficiently on electricity. It also handles all of your summer cooling.
- Below about 35°F, the system switches automatically to the gas furnace for strong, steady heat on the coldest days.
- Because the furnace only runs during the coldest part of the winter, it sees far fewer run hours, which extends its useful life and cuts wear and repairs.
The two-stage, variable-speed blower runs on low most of the time, giving you quieter operation, more even temperatures and better filtration than a single-stage furnace.

Why we install 80% furnaces
We install 80% efficiency furnaces paired with heat pumps, rather than 95%+ condensing furnaces. When a heat pump carries most of the heating load, the furnace runs far less, so the extra cost of a high-efficiency condensing furnace (new PVC venting through the wall or roof, a condensate drain, and higher equipment cost) rarely pays for itself. An 80% furnace can usually use your existing chimney or vent, keeps installation simpler, and puts your money where it saves the most: the heat pump.
